Cops recall hostage rescue drama
by Fadhal A. Ghani

THE nation was transfixed for six days in October 1986 when a band of prisoners held a doctor and a laboratory technician hostage at Pudu Prison. FADHAL A. GHANI and V. SHUMAN speak to two policemen - sergeants Mohd Mashkor Muradi and Nazaruddin Md Zain - who were decorated for their roles in ending the drama.

The six hardcore criminals were armed with sharpened shoe heels and other sharp weapons and for almost a week, they kept the authorities at bay.

They made some ludicrous demands, such as getaway vehicles and also cash from the police, failing which they threatened to harm the two hostages.

However, the two hostages, Dr Radzi Jaafar and Abdul Aziz Abdul Majid, were not harmed by the prisoners during their six-day ordeal.

They had been taken hostage on the morning of Oct 17, 1986, during a routine medical check-up on the prisoners.

They and their captors - Singaporean Jimmy Chuah Chap Seng and locals Ng Lai Huat, Sin Ah Lau, Lam Hock Seng, Yap Chee Keong and Phang Boon Ho - were given meals through an opening at one of the metal grilles near the sick bay of the hospital, where the two men were being imprisoned.

Police negotiators worked hard for six days to convince the men to surrender but to no avail.

It was on the afternoon of Oct 22, that the decision to storm the building and rescue the hostages was made.

A team of men from the federal police Special Action Squad (SAS) was called in to complete the task.

Some carried sidearms, but they were ordered to use only rattan canes.

The team included Sub-Inspector Mohd Mashkor Muradi, who was ranked sergeant at that time, and his colleague Sergeant Nazaruddin Md Zain.
