21 missing after boat capsizes in Rajang River (Updated)
By RAYNORE MERING
BELAGA: Unofficial reports say some 21 people are still missing while 181 others managed to swim to safety in the express boat sinking accident which occurred near here between 8.30am and 9.00am Tuesday. Kapit district council Betek Lahang, when contacted, said the police and other related government departments assisted by timber camps, oil palm and timber plantation officials were still trying to work out the actual figures. It is learnt that Belaga District Officer Abdul Halim Abdullah, accompanied by Hulu Rajang MP Wilson Ugak Kumbong and Belaga state assemblyman Liwan Lagang, were on their way to the scene of the incident. The express boat was extremely packed with timber camp, oil palm and timber plantation workers returning home for the Gawai Dayak festival this weekend, according to Betek. He added it was on its way to Kapit and Sibu when it crashed onto rock in the Rajang River after about 40 minutes of leaving Belaga town. He said police and medical teams were at the scene now doing search and rescue operations. - Bernama Earlier, it was reported that Liwan had spotted the overturned vessel and people swimming away from it towards the riverbank when he was flying by helicopter to Kuching. He immediately landed at Uma Tevok Long Buyun where he met the survivors and organised a rescue. He said it was not immediately known if there were any fatalities and what had caused the boat to capsize. "We haven't done a head count. "But according to those who swam to safety, there are people trapped in the boat," Liwan said when contacted. BERNAMA reported Kapit district councillor Daniel Levoh saying that the boat was believed to have carried more than 100 passengers, although its official load capacity was for 67 seated passengers. "The boat was supposed to have made the normal transit stop at Belaga but it did not do so as it was already packed. "There were more passengers waiting for it at the Belaga wharf so that was why it only stopped in midriver to allow crew members to buy food for the journey to Kapit and Sibu," he said. Daniel said he had received information that a pregnant woman was the only casualty in the incident but this had yet to be verified by the police, who were still at the scene. sumber - TheStar Online

SIBU, May 28 (Bernama) -- An express boat packed with passengers returning home for the Gawai Dayak Festival this weekend sank at the Jeram Tukok/Jeram Bungan area about 40-minute journey from here between 8.30am and 9am Tuesday morning.
According to Daniel Levoh, a councillor of the Kapit District Council, the express boat was believed to have carried more than 100 passengers although its official load capacity is for 67 seated passengers.
Contacted by Bernama, he said the "Bakun Mas Express Boat" passed by Belaga at 8am.
It had come from Bakun much earlier. Its passengers were timber camp and timber, and oil palm plantation workers in the area.
"The boat was supposed to have made the normal transit stop at Belaga but it did not do so as it was already packed.
"Many passengers were seen sitting on its roof which is not allowed.
"There were more passengers waiting for it at the Belaga wharf so that was why it only stopped in midriver to allow crew members to buy food for the journey to Kapit and Sibu," he said.
Daniel said he had received information that a pregnant woman was the only casualty in the incident but this had yet to be verified by the police who are still at the scene now.
He added when the boat crashed onto a rock in the area, the passengers were able to swim to the banks.
Meanwhile, Parti Rakyat Sarawak Information chief Dannny Bungan, who is from Sungai Asap, said the police and the Sarawak River Board personnel must be stationed in interior places like Bakun and Belaga to monitor the situation before any major festival.
"There are so many workers from Kapit and other areas working in the Bakun area. Come any long holidays there is a mad rush to get home by taking the express boat," he said.
He added if personnel from the two departments were around, they could monitor the situation well.
He also said all passengers must record their details in the passenger list as required by the Sarawak River Board and practiced in all major towns in the state.

SRB To Conduct Full Probe Into Tragic Belaga Boat Accident
KUCHING, May 28 (Bernama) -- The Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) will conduct a full investigation into the tragic accident involving an express boat that sank this morning in the Rajang River, with 21 passengers still missing, its chairman Datuk Roland Sagah said Tuesday.
He said SRB would not hesitate to take appropriate action against the express boat operator, who apparently did not heed the advice not to overload or allow passengers to climb on the roof when the vessel was too full while plying the rivers.
"I wish to express my sadness over what happened and sympathy for those involved in the express boat mishap," Sagah, who is also Sarawak state legislative assembly deputy speaker, told Bernama.
So far, 181 passengers managed to swim to safety after the ill-fated express boat sank at the Jeram Tukok/Jeram Bungan area, about four hours' journey upriver from Sibu.
He said SRB's initial investigation indicated that the express boat, which was believed to be overloaded with over 200 passengers returning home for the Gawai Dayak festivities, had encountered engine failure before crashing into a rock and sank.
On calls by various quarters that SRB personnel must be stationed in the interior places, including Bakun and Belaga to monitor the situation before a major festival, Sagah said it was awaiting approval to set up offices in these two places, which were accessible via the Rajang River.
At present, SRB personnel from Kapit, another riverine town along the Rajang River, were monitoring these areas, he said.
Sagah said boat operators had been advised to provide sufficient life jackets for their passengers as it was compulsory for them to wear life jackets at all times in open boats.
Meanwhile, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani when contacted said based on their initial findings, police believed the boat's load had exceeded its capacity for 67 seated passengers.
He said the identities of those still missing were sketchy because there was no official figure of the passengers on board as the operator concerned was believed to have not kept a manifest.
In another development, Sani said the search and rescue (SAR) operation for survivors of the ill fated express boat will resume at first daylight Wednesday.
As of 9.30pm Tuesday night, police confirmed there were 181 survivors while another 23 passengers were believed to be still missing in the accident.
"The SAR operation, involving police personnel and other relevant agencies, was halted at 6pm due to darkness," he told Bernama.
He said the identities of those still missing were sketchy because there were no official figures of passengers on board as the express boat operator was believed to have not kept a manifest.

Berenang 2.5km ke tebing sungai
2013/05/31 - 06:00:52 AM
Keletihan

Mangsa pertama ditemui
apa-apa pun.. negara baru sahaja 'terlepas' dari mengalami satu bencana yg sekiranya terjadi bakal mencatat angka kematian yg tinggi.. syukur alhamdulillah

Only Four More Missing In Boat Tragedy As Several Passengers Found Safe
BELAGA (Sarawak), May 31 (Bernama) -- The number of people missing after a boat capsized in the Rajang River near here on Tuesday has dwindled to four after another passenger reported to police that he was safe.
Ejang anak Nabau lodged a report at the Kapit police station last night saying that he had returned to his longhouse after swimming ashore following the incident.
Belaga District Police chief DSP Bakar Sebau said the search-and-rescue operation resumed at 7 am today for the four missing people - Maurice anak Ajan, Simon anak Patrick, Roslin anak Jati and a man identified only as Paulus.
The ill-fated express boat, Kawan Mas, was travelling from Bakun to Kapit when it capsized at Jeram Tukok-Jeram Bungan between 8.30 am and 9 am on Tuesday, resulting in 192 passengers being rescued and 11 reported missing. Five of the 11 have since been reported safe while the body of a man was recovered yesterday.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister's Department and Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) have allocated RM93,000 as aid for the victims of the boat tragedy.
Belaga state assemblyman Liwan Lagang said passengers who were safe but had not reported to the police should do so immediately to facilitate the disbursement of the aid.
"Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun informed me that the aid would be disbursed based on the police reports," he told reporters here today.
