Proton’s managing director, Datuk Seri Syed Zainal Abidin, has tendered
his resignation from the national automaker. Sources within the company
say that his bow out has apparently been brought about by differences
with the future owners of the company, DRB-Hicom, over the change in Proton’s future direction.

The report adds that according to the sources, senior management
personnel may follow suit with a flurry of resignations in the coming
weeks in light of Syed Zainal’s departure. Senior politicians and
government officials have been unsuccessful in persuading Syed Zainal to
reconsider his decision, they said.

The resignation is news to many at the national automaker, even with
corporate comms, according to the report; meanwhile, a top management
source in Proton also said that he is not aware of the resignation. If
the report is true, then the resignation and those to follow suit might
create a massive power void within the company.

We’ve been informed by Proton that an official statement is being prepared. More news to follow later in the day.

Who will take the wheel?

IT MAY still be early, but the guessing game on the man to lead Proton Holdings Bhd into a new era has begun.

Two
names have cropped up as the early favourites to become the new Proton
chief and not surprisingly, both of them are from the national
carmaker’s new owner DRBHICOM Bhd.

They are Datuk Lukman Ibrahim
and Abdul Rashid Musa, according to sources close to the group, which is
controlled by elusive businessman Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar AlBukhary.

The
sources said both Lukman and Abdul Rashid are worthy successors of
Proton’s current managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed
Tahir.

Syed Zainal, who was apppointed in January 2006, still has some months before his contract expires.

He
was headhunted by the then Proton board from fellow national carmaker
Perodua,to replace Tengku Tan Sri Mahaleel Tengku Ariff, who left under
controversial circumstances.

The sources said while Syed Zainal
should be credited with some successes at Proton, if one knows Syed
Mokhtar’s style, he will most likely appoint his own general to head the
company.

They pointed that when the tycoon took over Pos
Malaysia Bhd under a RM632 million deal, he made Datuk Khalid Abdol
Rahman the company’s CEO, in place of Datuk Syed Faisal Albar Syed A.R.
Albar.

Khalid was previously DRBHICOM group director of corporate
planning.

The sources said between Lukman and Abdul Rashid, the former appears to have the upper hand. This is given his seniority
within the DRB-HICOM group and closer ties with group managing
director Datuk Seri Mohd Khamil Jamil.

Lukman,
a former football player who almost made it to Malaysia’s Barcelona
1992 Olympic team, is currently DRB-HICOM’s group chief operating
officer.

Prior to that, he was the group’s chief financial officer.

Little-known
Abdul Rashid, meanwhile, has been CEO of the group's Pahang outfit
HICOM Automotive Manufacturers (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd for the past few
years.

He is literally responsible for DRB-HICOM's automotive
complex in Pekan, which houses production lines of various international
brands including Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Suzuki and Isuzu.


DRB-HICOM's stake in Proton will rise from zero to 42.7 per cent once
the RM1.29 billion share sale deal with Khazanah Nasional Bhd announced
on January 16 is completed in two months.

The group will fork
out a further RM1.7 billion or so under a mandatory general offer for
the remaining Proton shares upon completion of the initial deal.

Proton has made losses in two of its last five financial years,
partially dragged by loss-making British sports car subsidiary Lotus.

SUBANG JAYA, MALAYSIA – 10 APRIL 2012, We refer to the news report in The Edge Financial Daily dated 10 April 2012 on the resignation of PROTON’s Group Managing Director, Dato’ Sri Haji Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir. PROTON is not aware of the source of this speculation. Dato’ Sri Haji Syed Zainal is still holding the position of the Group Managing Director of PROTON, and his services are still required in the company.
