| Pesawat Nuri dalam latihan mendarat cemas
2010/06/22

| Scorpene ready for combatMalaysia's first submarine passes tropical water trials MARHALIM ABAS Monday, June 7th, 2010 11:34:00 [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]KUALA LUMPUR: KD Tunku Abdul Rahman, the country's first submarine, is ready for combat operations. The submarine attained its initial operational capability (IOC) status after successfully undergoing tropical water trials for the last three months. Industry sources told The Malay Mail the submarine has overcome teething problems which prevented it from completing the tropical water trials earlier this year. These sources said the submarine was expected to be declared fully operational by year-end. Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) chief Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Jaafar, however, was not available for comment yesterday. KD Tunku Abdul Rahman is based at the RMN base in Teluk Sepanggar, near Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. On Feb 10, The Malay Mail reported technical defects forced the RM1billion-plus French-built Scorpene submarine to delay tropical water trials scheduled for completion by end January. As a result, the submarine's builder, DCNS SA, extended its warranty, which was supposed to expire on Jan 25, until May 25 so that the submarine could complete this exercise, which is the first step to obtaining an IOC status. RMN's second submarine, KD Tun Razak is expected to arrive from France in late July or early August. The RMN procured these two submarines for some RM3.4 billion in 2002 from French and Spanish shipbuilders, DCNS and Navantia. They are classified as Perdana Menteri-class submarines with the RMN. Both submarines are armed with Black Shark wire-guided torpedoes and Exocet SM39 anti-ship missiles. They are able to carry out antisubmarine or anti-surface ship warfare, as well as special forces deployment in coastal waters. Both vessels are equipped with an emergency system to ensure the survival of its 32-man crew for up to seven days. These submarines are reportedly able to spend an average of 240 days a year at sea. RMAF's Hercules upgrade funded under 10MPKUALA LUMPUR: Royal Malaysian Air Force's (RMAF) Hercules C-130 fleet is expected to be upgraded to extend their service lives and reduce maintenance costs. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said yesterday the project was expected to start in 2014 once the current maintenance contract for the transport aircraft ends. The upgrading would be funded under the 10th Malaysian Plan (10MP) to be tabled in Parliament next week. Ahmad Zahid confirmed The Malay Mail report on May 27 that RMAF's Nuri helicopter fleet would be upgraded under the 10MP. The report stated the Nuri fleet would be upgraded to the S-61T Triton standard, as ordered by the United States State Department in February to the Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, the Nuri manufacturer. Some 28 Nuri's remain in service with RMAF although it is unclear how many will be upgraded. "The Nuri upgrade will not only extend the fleet's service life, but it will also be equipped with components to extend its durability," he said, without specifying the scope of the upgrade for the Hercules fleet. Ahmad Zahid said both projects were expected to be conducted locally by Airod Sdn Bhd. He, however, declined to reveal the costs of both projects. He also mentioned securing US cooperation during his meeting with US Defence Secretary Robert S. Gates during his official visit to Washington DC last week. Ahmad Zahid told The Malay Mail the upgrading would be conducted "on commercial arrangement" with selected US companies. But defence industry sources said the Hercules upgrading may leverage US Air Force's (USAF) Hercules Avionics Modernisation Programme (AMP) — headed by Boeing. It is also expected that the RMAF Hercules be fitted with defensive aids systems as the service envisaged expanding its role in international duties. The US AMP, however, is in trouble as the costs ballooned from US$7 million (RM22.9 million) to US$9 million (RM29.5 million) per aircraft which forced the Pentagon to reduce the number of aircrafts slated for modernisation from 432 to 222. Aircrafts undergoing the AMP would receive glass cockpits with head-up displays, night-vision imaging system compliance; and communication, navigation and surveillance/air traffic management systems. Components of the scaleable avionics architecture would include the digital glass cockpit, advanced flight management, terrain/traffic collision avoidance and smart-air data systems, colour weather radar and digital autopilot. By following the AMP route, RMAF would benefit from the logistics, support and training infrastructure being set up for the USAF, as well as a higher level of inter-operability. The upgraded avionics could be supplied in a kit form and installed locally. RMAF has been operating the Hercules since 1976 with the last five aircraft procured in 1995. At least one Hercules had been withdrawn from service, leaving 14 operating from Subang and Labuan air bases. Malay Mail Terdapat jugak komen2 bangang kat dalam tu | |

| Subject: US intercepts ballistic missile in test off Hawaii Wed 30 Jun 2010, 3:55 pm | |
| [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]HONOLULU – The U.S. military says it successfully shot down a short-range ballistic missile in a test off Hawaii. Soldiers of the 6th Air Defense Artillery Brigade from Fort Bliss, Texas, fired the interceptor from the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai. It shot down the target, which was fired after 9:30 p.m. Monday from a decommissioned amphibious assault ship positioned offshore, during the target's final stage of flight. The soldiers firing the interceptor didn't know ahead of time when the target missile was going to be launched. "Preliminary indications are that planned flight test objectives were achieved," the U.S. Missile Defense Agency said in a statement. The test was the latest for the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, which is part of a planned missile defense shield for the United States. Other parts of the network include a floating sea-based radar and interceptors fired from ships. The military also has Patriot anti-missile batteries to intercept missiles just before they strike. The agency said Monday's intercept occurred at the lowest altitude to date for the THAAD system. The THAAD system intercepts targets at higher altitudes, allowing it to defend larger area than the Patriots. Even so, it can only shoot down short and medium-range missiles. Intercontinental ballistic missiles are out of its range. The THAAD system is one of two missile defense systems the military tests at the Pacific Missile Range Facility on Kauai. The other is the sea-based Aegis system. The Missile Defense Agency coordinates U.S. missile tests in cooperation with the Army, Navy and Air Force. Hula Hula | |

- Bernama [You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]

| KD Tun Razak and Lumut Naval Base - Quote :
- Written on July 4, 2010 – 11:56 am | by Marhalim Abas |
KUALA LUMPUR: Due to its late arrival, I was unable to cover the arrival of KD Tun Razak at Lumut on Friday. I am guessing however most are aware of the arrival of the second submarine of the Perdana Menteri-class.
The Star in its report on Saturday quoted the RMN chief as saying Speaking when receiving the submarine, Adm Abdul Aziz said the navy would not hesitate to take action against companies which leaked its secrets to the public.
He said the navy would recommend that the contracts of these companies, which have dealings with the navy, be cancelled or that legal action be taken against them.
Adm Abdul Aziz said that of late, there was a dangerous trend where information about the country’s strategic assets and sensitive information was made public via the Inter net.
“Information about the submarines had also been purposely manipulated by certain parties for their own selfish reasons.”
Since I was not present at the PC I cannot say which company that is in danger of losing its contract for not being careful with their statements. As far as I know the only company that been issuing statements on RMN assets for the last three months is DCNS, the builder of two Perdana Menteri class submaines (though I am not suggesting that it was this company that Adm Aziz was referring too).
Although I was not in Lumut for the ceremony, linked below are pictures from the Lumut naval base, courtesy of a close friend. I hope no one will accuse me of making sensitive information open to the public as these images were taken from a ferry making its way to Pangkor Island. Hundreds of foreigners take the ferries to Pangkor as does thousands of locals on a daily basis….
