Former international remembers teamate and voices his displeasure at FAM for not coming to his aid
“ WHEN in the limelight, we are hailed, sought after and feted. But once our prowess and name fades, all is forgotten by our so called guardians of the beautiful game of football. ”
Those were the words of the tearful 72 year old former national football stalwart Choe Choe when clutching the most treasured photograph of his playing days collection of the 1958 Merdeka Tournament starting eleven that beat Hong Kong in the final.
Back in the days : The 1958 Merdeka Tournaments champions. The late Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Minhat (seated first from left) while 18 year old Robert Choe is standing (second from left).
Upon learning of the death of Raja Bola Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Minhat who passed away on September 28 at the age of 74, he took down the framed aged black and white photo which also features the greatest national goal ace, to rekindle playing memories of those yesteryears.
Interestingly, apart from Choe, then making the national side as an eighteen year old schoolboy, the photo shows the likes of Abdul Ghani of Selangor, Chan Tuck Choy (Pk), Mok Wai Hong (NS), Rahim Omar (Sel), Wong Kim Seng (Pk), Jalil Che Din (Pg), Sexton Lourdes (Selangor), Ahmad Nazam (Pk), Ng Boon Bee (Pk) and S.Govindarajoo (Sel) with then sports loving Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman in the centre of them all.
“ Abdul Ghani was the best around then, not only in Malaysia but in Asia as well. A rather quiet chap and very modest best describes his personality.
Still keeping fit : Seventy-two year old Choe is a regular on his exercise bike to build up strength in his legs
“ I was two years his junior but he never ever put his himself on a pedestal. He always shared tips and views of the game to us the younger players.
“ We both went on a training stint to Germany sometime in the sixties and became very good friends since. I will miss him very much, ” said Choe while taking a ‘ swipe ’ at the Football Association of Malaysia for his current plight as a ‘ forgotten man of Malaysian football ’ .
After leaving Malacca High School in 1957, the young Choe was snapped up by the state medical department and worked at the Malacca General Hospital.
With his footballing skills and play standard the talk of the day then, Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank came into the picture, offering him a job in 1961 so that he could make further good his footballing career.
Choe stayed on with the bank from 1961 to 1976 prior to retirement and took up much no-pay leave to galvanize his role on the game’s national front flourish.
Apart from gaining winner medals in the 1958 and 1959 Merdeka Tournaments, he was part of the side that emerged joint champions with Korea in the 1960 series.
He also picked up a silver medal at the 1959 Bangkok SEAP Games, gold in the 1961 Rangoon series and the 1962 Jakarta Asian Games bronze in football. He also donned Malacca colours between 1957 and 1973 apart from being the state Malaysia Cup coach for two seasons in the early eighties.
“ During my playing tenure for the country, my no-pay leave came up to some 108 months for which time no EPF contributions were made.
“ So there was a substantial loss of my money in this respect. At the height of my national football career, we did not receive monetary perks or incentives unlike the present set of players receive when in training or playing duty.
“ At that time we played for the country with pride and honour plus for the sheer love and passion for the game. The treasured items of those days were two Rolex watches given by Tunku following our triumphs in the 1958 and 1959 Merdeka Tournament series. They are still in my possession, ” he said.
Choe said he wrote to the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) explaining his plight and also recounting all about his national duties.
It was done in the hope of gaining some financial reward for the national duty done.
He said a secretariat staff acknowledged the letters, but could not do anything for him.
Afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease, Choe lives with his wife Alice, a former Malacca Telecoms personnel in their own home in Ujong Pasir.
Their house is filled with international and national football memorabalias.
He has two grown up sons who are living with their own.
Choe is driven around by his wife to undertake household chores while calling regularly at the AGAPE Day Care Centre for the Elderly to catch up with friends and partake in the lively sing-a-long sessions.
