Sri Lankan air force jets crash, killing one pilot

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) - Two fighter jets collided and crashed Tuesday while practicing for an exhibition marking the Sri Lankan air force's 60th anniversary, killing one of the pilots, officials said.

The two Israeli-built Kfir jets crashed in the western district of Gamapah, a government statement said. One pilot was killed and the other survived after ejecting from his plane.

The cause of the crash was not immediately announced.

Police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said no casualties to residents on the ground or damage to property has been reported. The area is about 22 miles (35 kilometres) northeast of the capital, Colombo.

Athula Priyantha, a resident in the district, said burning debris from one plane was strewn across a nearby open patch of land, while the second jet crashed a few miles (kilometres) away.

Kfir jets were widely used by the air force during Sri Lanka's civil war with the Tamil Tiger rebels, who were fighting for an independent state for ethnic minority Tamils.

Jet terhempas masa buat aerobatik tu biasa kengkawan. Blue Angels USN sama Thunderbirds USAF pun pernah hilang a/c sama pilot masa airshow dan latihan.

hasil research yang aku buat ..... kelahiran Kfir dan nesher ini adalah akibat daripada embargo pihak kerajaan perancis terhadap israel yang dah order 50 unit mirage 5 untuk keperluan air superiority di asia barat pada masa tu kebanyakan negara arab dah papaki pesawat2 russia israel cuma ada handfull of mirage III je mase tu dan deplete akibat perang 6 hari.

seperkara lagi, mulanya israel tak harap sangat mirage ni sebab dok tunggu A4 syhawk dan F4 Phantom II, tetapi apabila israel gunakan mirage 3, diorang rasa a/c ni bagus untuk air superiority. so diorang order la mirage 5. tapi kena embargo.

akibat dari embargo yang dikenakan perancis, israel bertindak menghasilkan salinan cetak rompak mirage 5 yang dicuri blueprintnya daripada perancis yang diberi nama nesher, selepas tu pulak, hasil daripada kerja jahat pihak perisikan israel sekali lagi yang mencuri blueprint mirage 5, maka terhasil lah kfir
