Mystery and speculation surround underground structure in Kelantan

TUMPAT:
A shroud of mystery surrounds an underground structure found here, with
speculation of precious artefacts or metals being there, especially
after the area was declared off-limits by men claiming that it was a
state government project.
People curious about the find have not
been allowed into the 2.2ha site in Palekbang beside Sungai Kelantan
that has been under a 24-hour surveillance by at least 10 men with
walkie talkies.
One of “guards” interviewed by The Star
said the area was closed to ensure public safety while another person
claimed he was there on behalf of the Kelantan Government.
He claimed he had been given the authority to bar unauthorised people from entering the area.
Asked
why the area was not secured by security forces like the police or
armed forces, the “guard” angrily replied that he was carrying out his
job.
“No one can question why we are here because this is a
government project and we are under instructions to stop people from
going into the area,” said the elderly man, who wore a blue T-shirt with
a yellow Kelantan Government coat-of-arms sticker.
People were also not allowed to take photographs of the site.
Authorised personnel have to leave their identification cards at a makeshit tent to get temporary tags for entry into the site.

“The
people manning the sentry posts do not look like people in authority
and I wonder under what power they have to stop people from entering the
area,” said Baharom, who was on his way to Pengkalan Kubor with his
family.
On Nov 30, a sand mining company discovered a tunnel-like structure buried underneath a railway bridge while clearing the area.
The local Fire and Rescue Department were ordered by the state secretary office to pump out water from the tunnel.
Seven wells and ventilation airwells near the railway bridge were also discovered and are said to be part of the tunnel.
Locals
here believed the structure was part of an ancient city buried
underground that is at least the size of three football fields.

Noor Aishah Deraman, 57, said “coffee shop talk” was that there was
buried treasure belonging to the Japanese army, besides an ancient
Siamese Kingdom.
“As far as I know, the tunnel and wells were used to fill water into steam locomotives,” she added.
Deputy Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Yakob was reported by Bernamaas
saying that the state government was still studying the matter and
would inform the people after the study had been completed and urged the
public not to speculate.
Military assistance had been requested
because of the possibility of weapons as it was previously a Japanese
military area, he said.

Artefacts find to draw archaeologists to Palekbang

KOTA BARU: Archaeologists and history buffs are expected to converge here after the discovery of artefacts from a century-old sultanate at Kampung Sungai Nyior, Palekbang, Tumpat.

State Economic Planning, Finance and Wel­fare committee chairman Datuk Husam Musasaid the sultanate dated back to the 1890s.

“Ancient coins dating back to the Ottoman empire era were also found,
which proves that Palekbang was a significant international port.

“The coins are believed to have been brought in between 500 and 1,200 years ago.

“Sultan Mansor and Sultan Muhammad III ruled in the 1890s and we are now trying to determine which Sultan built the kingdom based on
assessments made by numismatic experts,” he said on Wednesday.

The Tunjong Development Corporation[/url] has been given the task of developing the area for tourism, said Husam, who is also the corporation’s chairman.

“The coins found have words like Kelantan Billah and are believed to have come from either one of the Sultans.

“Coins from the Ottoman empire have ‘Medinah As-Sharifah’
inscriptions on them, including a picture believed to be of Nabawi
Mosque and the Kaabah,” he added.

The Japanese administration had used Palekbang as a port to transport tin to Japan during the Second World War,

He said based on the book written by Abdul Halim Nasir titled The History of the Malay Civilisation at River Basins, there was an island called Sabak Island that disappeared in the 1960’s.

“The Sultan Iskandar Shah kingdom, called the Istana Cegar Bergayung Tanah Serendah Kebun, was located there.

“Sultan Mansor Shah of Malacca had sent his army to attack the
kingdom in the 14th century and this information led us to believe that
there are many shipwrecks at the bottom of the Kelantan river,” he
added.

He revealed that a financier had agreed to bring dredges and high-tech equipment to discover shipwrecks in the Kelantan river from
Penambang to Palekbang.

Husam said the government had yet to send any of the artefacts to be assessed.

Excavation works in the area were done with the cooperation of the
Museum and Antiquities Corpo­ration, Drainage and Irri­ga­tion
Department, university academics and experts from the National Archives.

TUMPAT – “Itu bukan lubang ke terowong tetapi telaga dan di bawahnya ada saluran air yang tembus ke Sungai Kelantan,” kata Wan Jafar Wan Abdullah, 92, menjelaskan misteri terowong peninggalan Jepun ketika perang dunia kedua yang kecoh diperkatakan ditemui di Kampung Palekbang berdekatan Pangkalan Pasir Haji Manaf, di sini.

Kesan-kesan peninggalan Stesen Keretapi Palekbang masih ada di Palekbang.

Di dalam blog, di laman sosial dan di kedai kopi tersebar cerita mengatakan terowong bawah tanah itu panjangnya 100 kilometer bersambung sehingga ke Takbai, Thailand dan mempunyai lapangan terbang bawah tanah hingga ke Lalang Luas, Machang.

Dikatakan juga di bawah tanah itu terdapat kubu Jepun, landasan kereta api dan juga ada hasil bumi.

Ini antara telaga yang bersambung ke Sungai Kelantan yang didakwa oleh sesetengah pihak sebagai laluan ke terowong di bawah tanah.

Beberapa buah telaga yang dijumpai di kawasan tersebut didakwa lubang untuk turun ke terowong panjang terbabit.

Wan Jaffar berkata, mustahil ada terowong bawah tanah kerana dia adalah salah seorang pekerja yang terlibat mengali telaga di lokasi tersebut sebelum penjajahan Jepun iaitu ketika usianya awal 20an.

Kampung Palekbang wujud sebelum kedatangan Inggeris di Kelantan bagaimanapun kewujudan kampung ini mula tercatat setelah Inggeris membina landasan kereta api di pertengahan tahun 1920-an.

Menurutnya, pada masa itu bekalan air untuk kegunaan keretapi yang berulang-alik memunggah biji besi dari Temangan, Machang - Tumpat tidak mencukupi kerana di Stesen keretapi Tumpat tiada bekalan air kerana masalah air masin.

“Pihak Inggeris kerahkan gali telaga di kawasan Stesen Keretapi Palekbang untuk mendapatkan bekalan air tersebut.

“Telaga pertama digali sedalam 70 kaki, kerana memerlukan air yang banyak beberapa buah telaga berhampiran sungai digali lagi, kalau tak silap pakcik lima buah telaga kesemuanya,” katanya yang berasal dari Kampung Laut, kini menetap di Kampung Semat Jal.

Wan Jaffar berkata, kesemua telaga ini bersambung kerana di bawah tanah dibuat lubang pada setiap perigi untuk dipasang saluran air yang tembus ke Sungai Kelantan.

“Air sungai ini boleh masuk ke dalam telaga dan punca air telaga ini disedut dari sungai tersebut.

“Perigi besar yang pertama dipasang pam air dan pam inilah berfungsi menyedut air dari Sungai Kelantan, sehingga ke hari ini perigi itu masih ada di Palekbang,” katanya ketika ditemui di rumahnya di Kampung Semat Jal.

Tinjauan Sinar Harian ke Pangkalan Pasir Haji Manaf, Palekbang mendapati kerja-kerja pembersihan giat dijalankan dan dikawal rapi.

Sinar Harian semalam melaporkan Kampung Palekbang tiba-tiba menjadi tersohor apabila tersebar cerita penemuan terowong panjang peninggalan Jepun di bawah tanah di laman sosial, di blog dan juga cakap-cakap di kedai kopi sejak seminggu lalu.

Kewujudannya terus menjadi teka teki apabila khabar angin mengatakan terowong tersebut panjangnya 100 kilometer bersambung sehingga ke Takbai, Thailand dan mempunyai lapangan terbang bawah tanah hingga ke Lalang Luas, Machang.

Penduduk, Jali Mustapha menunjukkan telaga sedalam 70 kaki yang diceritakan oleh Wan Jaffar.

Dikatakan juga di bawah tanah itu terdapat kubu Jepun, landasan kereta api dan juga ada hasil bumi yang kini dalam kajian pembangunan eko sejarah seliaan Kerajaan Negeri yang sedang giat dilaksanakan di lokasi tersebut.

Beberapa hari lalu kelihatan pihak polis, tentera, bomba berada di lokasi tersebut.

Bagaimanapun kesahihan kewujudan terowong tersebut masih terus menjadi persoalan sehingga kini.

Sementara itu, Perbadanan Muzium Negeri Kelantan tidak menolak wujudnya terowong di Kampung Palekbang sebagaimana didakwa pihak tertentu sebelum ini.

Pengarahnya, Abdul Rahman Abdullah berkata, bagaimanapun statusnya masih dalam siasatan Jawatankuasa Ekonomi, Kewangan dan Kebajikan Negeri Kelantan yang dipengerusikan, Datuk Husam Musa.

“Setakat ini ia masih di peringkat cari gali. Perbadanan Muzium Negeri sendiri belum menerima maklumat secara rasmi, walaupun saya sudah beberapa kali meninjau lokasi tersebut setelah mendapat arahan pihak atasan,” katanya ketika dihubungi Sinar Harian di sini, semalam.

Abdul Rahman yang berasal dari kawasan tersebut turut menjelaskan daripada maklumat awal dan apa yang diketahui sebagai penduduk di kawasan tersebut, kewujudan kawasan yang didakwa mempunyai terowong itu sebenarnya adalah telaga untuk mengisi air bagi kegunaan keretapi.

“Sebab suatu ketika dahulu kereta api menggunakan tenaga wap yang terhasil daripada air untuk bergerak, dan selepas minyak digunakan ia ditinggalkan begitu sahaja,” katanya.[SH]
