Proton's Inspira receives 1,100 bookings Mon, 25 Oct 2010 22:05
KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd has received over 1,100 bookings for its new model, Inspira, ahead of the four-door executive sedan's launch on Nov 10 this year.
In a statement today, the national carmaker said its showrooms nationwide had been flooded with enquiries from buyers and those who had paid a booking fee of RM1,000 since its launch on Oct 21.
"The enormous level of interest shown since we first announced the introduction of the new model is certainly a big sign of approval from the buyers," said its group managing director, Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir.
He said Inspira was jointly developed by Proton and Mitsubishi Motor Corp under a new strategic alliance.
"The new strategic relationship is based on the fundamentals of knowledge exchange, and one that brings Proton to a new and higher level in which we can benefit from technologically in our pursuit of evolving into a global car manufacturer," he said.

Subject: Proton Inspira R3 Tue 02 Nov 2010, 1:27 pm
The new Proton Inspira is a blessing for those aspiring to own a Mitsubishi Lancer and a bit of a thorn on the side of those who already own a Lancer. There’s no doubt that it’s a good car; it’s built by Mitsubishi so there’s certain standards that it has to adhere to.
While bookings are already open, deliveries have not started as yet, but as soon as that happens, it will also mark the beginning of a culture that comes with the release of any new Proton model – modification.
My guess is the first thing that will be replaced is the Proton badge for a Mitsubishi tri-diamond. Other than that, there will be the usual case of Lancer front and rear bumpers, side skirts, and perhaps even the entire Evo treatment of a large rear wing, rear diffuser, overgrown exhausts, I’m sure you get it.
While this may be true, there are also rumours that Proton’s own tuning division has something up its pipeline as well. Race, Rally, Research, or better known as R3 is said to be working on what we know as the Inspira-X.
There are no further details on this but considering that R3 has already been working on its own turbocharging system for a while now, and the equipment list on the Satria Neo Lotus Racing Edition is enough to make any hardcore Japanese enthusiast envious, the Inspira-X, if it ever happens, could just turn out to be the icing on the cake for Proton.
While we wait around and hunt for more information, here’s a little something that Tom whipped up when we asked him how he thought the Inspira-X may look like, the man prefers to let his pictures do the talking, we hope he’s right because that could just be the best looking Proton in a while.

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.] The Proton Inspira, due to be unleashed in a few days time, has garnered praises from Mitsubishi Motor Corporation’s top management and evaluation team as having better ride and handling characteristics and NVH (Noise, Vibration & Harshness) Isolation than the original Mitsubishi Lancer, the base vehicle from which the new Inspira is derived.
This was the final concluding comment from Mr Nakao, Head of R & D, Mr. Kobashi, DCGM of Asean, and Mr Tamura, Master Evaluator of the MMC team that made a thorough product evaluation and testing of the first Inspira off the assembly line at the Proton Plant in Shah Alam, where the Inspira is built on a mixed line with the Proton Exora.
Although the Proton Inspira is built on a ‘collaboration’ basis with Mitsubishi Motors Corporation, it goes beyond a mere ‘re-badge’ exercise. Leveraging upon its experience with Lotus Handling, the Proton team led by General Manager, Ride & Handling, Tengku Azizan Tengku Ahmad, went to work on the base car to evaluate its handling characteristics. Although the base Mitsubishi Lancer was found to be excellent, the team concluded that it could be improved – the team felt that there was a little too much roll, and some oversteer tendencies during cornering, and set to work on the Inspira version of the car to improve it.
Basically, the Proton Ride & Handling team developed new shock absorber damping force settings to tune the ride to suit Malaysian road conditions, and replaced the stabilizer bars front and rear to reduce roll during corners. The result is ride and handling characteristics that give the Inspira a more linear and progressive handling throughout a corner, and thus making it easier for the average driver to handle with ease.
Select members of the media were invited to tour the R & D facilities where the bulk of the development work has been carried out. Impressive and up to date equipment, including some proprietary equipment developed by Lotus were shown to the media.
Later, we went to the assembly line where the Inspira is assembled, and got a first hand look at how the cars were put together.
Personally, I think the product collaboration exercise between Proton and Mitsubishi is a healthy exercise – it cuts down valuable development time by adopting a current and well-proven base product, not to mention the huge savings in development costs.
Insofar as Malaysians are concerned, what we will get is not only a Mitsubishi Lancer, but an enhanced version that is already up and running, and not a product that was started from scratch – and at a more attractive price. Personally, i look forward to more exercises like this - for example, if the new Golf GTi were to be developed into the new Satria replacement, I would be amongst the first to put my name down for one! - Autoworld
