Stealth Helos Used In Osama Raid Empty Stealth Helos Used In Osama Raid

Stealth Helos Used In Osama Raid

Well, now we know why all of us had trouble ID'ing the helicopter that crashed, or was brought down, in the Osama raid.

Stealth Helos Used In Osama Raid 8065b635-752f-4a63-ae97-84beaff28a19.Large

It was a secretly developed stealth helicopter, probably a highly modified version of an H-60 Blackhawk. Photos published in the Daily Mail and on the Secret Projects board show that the helicopter's tail features stealth-configured shapes on the boom and tip fairings, swept stabilizers and a "dishpan" cover over a non-standard five-or-six-blade tail rotor. It has a silver-loaded infra-red suppression finish similar to that seen on some V-22s.

No wonder the team tried to destroy it. The photos show that they did a thorough job - except for the end of the tailboom, which ended up outside the compound wall. (It almost looks as if the helo's tail hit the wall on landing.)

Stealth helicopter technology in itself is not new and was applied extensively to the RAH-66 Comanche. Priorities are usually different versus fixed-wing aircraft. Reducing noise and making it less conspicuous is the first job (more main and tail blades reduce the classic whop-whop signature). Listen here.

Noise can also be reduced by aerodynamic modifications and flight control changes that make it possible to slow the rotor down, particularly in forward flight below maximum speed. Infra-red reduction measures are crucial -- the Comanche had an elaborate system of exhaust ducts and fresh-air mixers in its tailboom.

Radar cross-section reduction is also possible - you can't make a helo as radar-stealthy as a fixed-wing airplane, because of all its moving parts, but on the other hand it is generally operating at low altitude in ground clutter, and is not an easy target. Reducing RCS also makes jamming more effective, whether from the aircraft itself or from a standoff jammer.

The willingness to compromise this technology shows the importance of the mission in the eyes of US commanders -- and what we're seeing here also explains why Pakistani defenses didn't see the first wave (at least) coming in.

Tells a lot of story... or rather open up many questions.

- questions on the helos itself.
- questions on its stealth capability
- questions on Pakistani's air defence
- questions on future Pak-US bilateral relationship...

Stealth Helos Used In Osama Raid Osama-Bin-Laden-Dead-Abbottabad-Raid-Ended-10-Years-Of-Defiance-As-Obama-Watched

From open source articles:-

a) In helicopter, the blade itself create radar reflection. So the best protection from radar is for the helicopter to fly as close as possible to the earth taking advantage of the earth topography to mask it's approach. Noise on the other hand is the main concern for 'stealth' heli. Thus reduction of noise is the paramount issue.

b) Because the heli fly close to the earth that's why the Pakistan radar unable to detect. The raid was originated from Bagram, a base in Afghanistan. Flying between the valleys between Afghanistan and Pakistan, will make it harder to detect. Many blind spots to Pakistan radar.

c) The heli crash is said due to vortex created when nearing the Osama high walled complex. Not due to enemy action (that is what they said).

d) As for Pak-Us bilateral relation, it will not harm much. The US has earlier informed Pakistan about the existing of the complex but the Pakistan ignored (or pretend to ignore) such information. The Pak may be informed but to prevent the backlash of the "community" they may 'pretend' to claim not being informed and 'act' to the protest the infringement of their airspace.

I do believe at the end China is the one who will benefit from it. The Chinese will surely reverse engineer the stealth helicopter and in a few years time we will see the photo-copy of the heli.

Furthermore they did try to reduce the RCS in one. Just look at the shaping of the WZ-10 below; By the looking of it a lot of RAM and composite material incorporated into it. HOWEVER THE ROTOR BLADE is still very conventional compared to what the american has. So make your own conclusions.....pirat pirat pirat

I do believe at the end China is the one who will benefit from it. The Chinese will surely reverse engineer the stealth helicopter and in a few years time we will see the photo-copy of the heli.

As I've mentioned earlier, this is the latest news. As usual edited;

Osama Bin Laden Raid: Pakistan Hints China Wants a Peek at Secret Helicopter

Pakistani officials said today they're interested in studying the remains of the U.S.'s secret stealth-modified helicopter abandoned during the Navy SEAL raid of Osama bin Laden's compound, and suggested the Chinese are as well.

The U.S. has already asked the Pakistanis for the helicopter wreckage back, but one Pakistani official told ABC News the Chinese were also "very interested" in seeing the remains. Another official said, "We might let them [the Chinese] take a look."

A U.S. official said he did not know if the Pakistanis had offered a peek to the Chinese, but said he would be "shocked" if the Chinese hadn't already been given access to the damaged aircraft.

The helicopter's remains have apparently become another chip in a tense, high-stakes game of diplomacy between the U.S. and Pakistan following the U.S.'s unilateral military raid of bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, more than a week ago. The potential technological advancements gleaned from the bird could be a "much appreciated gift" to the Chinese, according to former White House counterterrorism advisor and ABC News consultant Richard Clarke.

"Because Pakistan gets access to Chinese missile technology and other advanced systems, Islamabad is always looking for ways to give China something in return," Clarke said.

The Chinese and Pakistani governments are known to have a close relationship. Last month Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif concluded a trip to Beijing, afterwards telling Pakistan's local press that China was Pakistan's "best friend."
