ITALIAN RIDER DIES IN HORRIFIC MotoGP SMASH

Italian motorcycle rider Marco Simoncelli has died after a crash in the Malaysian MotoGP. The 24-year-old's helmet was knocked off when he fell and was hit by the bikes of Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi as he slid across the track on his Honda.

The season's penultimate race was abandoned immediately after the collision just four minutes into the event, as Simoncelli lay motionless on the track. Yamaha's Edwards also came off his bike but escaped serious injury, while Rossi was able to nurse his Ducati back to the pits. Simoncelli lay stricken on the track before being taken to the circuit's medical centre where he was pronounced dead.

MotoGP said in a statement: "Despite (doctors') efforts, Marco sadly succumbed to his injuries. "Everybody involved in MotoGP extends its deepest condolences to Marco's family, friends and team at this tragic loss." Casey Stoner, who won his second MotoGP title at his home Australian Grand Prix last week, said: "As soon as I saw the footage it just makes you sick inside.

"Whenever the helmet comes off that's not a good sign."

Simoncelli had enjoyed the finest hour of his career at Sepang when he finished third to clinch the 2008 season's 250cc title. The death comes just a week after Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon died in a 15-car crash in Las Vegas in IndyCar.

Hundreds of people have attended the British racer's funeral in Florida.

Sepang Circuit chairman Mokhzani Mahathir said: "It is a sad back-to-back weekend for motorsports. "We try our best to avoid incidents and prepare for the worst. You see, 99% of the time, riders falling and walking away. Only 1% do not."

Race director Paul Butler promised a thorough investigation. After the crash, restless fans upset with the lengthy delay following it showered the track with water bottles and other debris. The last fatal crash in the world motorcycling championship was last year when Japan's Shoya Tomizawa was killed.

Wa rasa.. kita patut lebih simpati kat riders Malaysia.. wa beri jaminan tiap-tiap hari ada saja kemalangan maut babitkan Motosikal... yg cedera pun bukan sket.

dia nak jatuh then dia still nak try kawal bike until last minit dia jatuh, sepatutnya bila dia dh nak jatuh, just buang jerk terus motor, xyah nak try recover lagi... disebabkan effort dia nak save motor dia n at the same time nak correct balik error dia, dia n motor dia masuk balik tengah...

si marco ni tak ikat helmet die ketat-ketat ke sampai tercabut masa berlanggar tu ?

posible gak dia x ikat ketat or maybe x ikat or maybe jugak klip helmet dia tuh dah ada fectory defect, dgn impact didalam kelajuan tinggi yang betul2 kena sweet spot, mmg bleh tertanggal helmet...
