The decision had been widely expected, given the close ties between Tokyo and Washington.

The US is Japan's main security ally and the two countries regularly conduct joint military drills in the region.

The move will be a major boost to Lockheed Martin, whose F-35 programme has been criticised in the US for its high cost and production delays. Analysts say it is likely to trigger more orders, including from South Korea, which is also seeking to replace its fighter fleet.

The exact details of the contract, including numbers and timings, are yet to be determined, but in a boost to the domestic economy, officials in Tokyo said Japanese firms would be involved in production of the jets.

The decision will, however, be a disappointment for European manufacturers behind the Eurofighter Typhoon, including British defence company BAE Systems, and to US-based Boeing, producer of the Super Hornet.

Dramatic Military Helicopter Crash Caught on Camera

Dramatic
new video gives a rare, up-close view of an American military attack
chopper apparently losing control and crashing hard at a remote,
mountainous outpost in Afghanistan.

The video, which appeared
online recently, shows an Apache helicopter coming into view before
swooping down low over the coalition outpost. The person shooting the
video, who has not been identified, shouts in apparent fear as the
helicopter narrowly misses a building and then chuckles in relief after
it pulls back up. But after coming back around, the chopper drops down
low again and slams its belly onto the snowy ground just feet from the
camera.

The helicopter skids towards another group of people, but comes off the ground briefly before crashing again in the distance.

A
spokesperson for the U.S.-led International Security Assistance Force
told ABC News the video was taken Feb. 6 in the Paktika province in
Afghanistan. Remarkably, no one on the ground was injured and the
aircrew survived, the spokesperson said.

There was no enemy activity in the area and Army is currently investigating the incident, he said.

While
the cause of the crash is unknown, former Marine Corps pilot and
current ABC News consultant Steve Ganyard said it appears the pilot was
performing dangerous low-level maneuvers for spectators and then lost
control.

Military rescue teams yesterday were searching for five air force
personnel who were aboard a helicopter that crashed into the sea off
eastern Taiwan during a rescue mission on Monday night.
The air
force said six people were on board the Sikorsky S-70C-6 Super Blue Hawk
helicopter, which went down off Lanyu (蘭嶼), also known as Orchid
Island.
Airman Tsai Yi-che (蔡宜哲), 28, who was standing near the
rear cabin door during the operation, was flung off the helicopter as it
spiralled out of control before crashing into the sea.
Tsai was immediately rescued by crewmembers on a fishing boat nearby, the air force said.
He was then taken to a Taitung County hospital by a coast guard vessel.
Tsai only suffered slight injuries and returned to his base yesterday morning, the air force said.
The
Ministry of National Defense said the five missing personnel were
wearing rescue suits. The air force and the army have launched search
missions, and the first 72 hours are considered the most crucial.
Colonel
Hsieh Mao-sung (謝茂淞), deputy chief of the air force’s supervision
division, told a press conference yesterday morning that the S-70C
helicopter took off from Chiayi Air Force Base at 6:42pm on Monday to
rescue an Indonesian fisherman who was suffering chest pains on a
fishing boat near Orchid Island.
Hsieh said the helicopter landed
at Pingtung Air Force Base to refill before heading toward Orchid
Island. At 9:14pm, as the helicopter was approaching the boat, it
suddenly disappeared off the radar, the air force said.
The helicopter’s last communication with the base was: “Have spotted the target, ready to launch the rope sling.”
The
accident occurred off Huatung Basin, which is known for its unstable
currents as the ocean reaches depths of 4,000m, a coast guard officer
said.


The pilot, Major Lu Cheng (陸正), 36; co-pilot Captain Hung Shih-hao
(洪釋豪), 29; and three airmen — Tsai Kao-hui (蔡國輝), 52, Chen Chun-hung
(陳俊宏), 37, and Chen Ping-hung (陳秉鴻), 27, were still missing as of press
time.
Hsieh said five navy ships and eight coast guard vessels had
been dispatched to the area for the search-and-rescue operation, while
the air force had deployed S-70C helicopters, C-130 Hercules aircraft,
E-2K Hawkeye aircraft and AS-365 helicopters.
The air force has
purchased a total of 18 S-70C helicopters from the US since 1986. The
four Super Blue Hawks in service were delivered in 1998.
This was
the second crash involving a S-70C, the air force said. A S-70C-1
crashed into a mountain in November 1995 in bad weather.

Two
hero pilots have been praised for preventing scores of potential deaths
by dumping plane fuel as their doomed F-18 Navy fighter jet plummeted
to the ground in Virginia Beach, Virginia - decisive action that
authorities saved the craft from sparking a 'massive, massive fireball'.

Although
the plane crashed into an apartment building, ripping the roofs off
condos, town houses, and a retirement community, the two crew members
safely ejected from the craft. There are no known deaths - but fears
remain over three elderly people who are unaccounted for.

Five
civilians, as well as the two pilots, who were a student and an
instructor, were taken to hospital to be treated, but their injuries
were not serious and all but one, a pilot, had been released by Friday
evening.

Rescuers continued to search the wreckage of the Mayfair
Mews apartment complex for victims on Friday night; the whereabouts of
three residents who live in the block are unknown, Reuters reported.

The
terrifying footage and photographs from this afternoon painted a
different picture, showing smoke rising from numerous homes and the
wreckage of the fuselage laying smoldering on the ground.

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - An avalanche engulfed a Pakistani army battalion headquarters near the Indian border on Saturday, burying 124 soldiers and 11 civilians, with no sign of survivors 17 hours later, the military said.

The snow left by the avalanche was up to 80 feet (25 metres) deep over an area a kilometre wide, state television quoted army spokesman Major-General Athar Abbas as saying.

The victims were trapped in one of the most unforgiving environments on earth, at an altitude of 15,000 feet (4,500 metres) near the Siachen Glacier in the Karakoram mountain range.

The area is also one of the world's most militarily tense frontiers, where the Indian and Pakistani armies have confronted each other over disputed territory for decades.

Eleven civilian employees of the military were buried under the snow along with the soldiers of the 6 Northern Light Infantry Battalion, the military said in a statement.

"This battalion headquarter (has been) situated at same place for the last 20 years and no incident of this nature has happened," it said.

TAKEN BY SURPRISE

Helicopters were deployed in a rescue operation. Troops used sniffer dogs to comb the area, said the military. Heavy engineering equipment was flown to the site from the garrison city of Rawalpindi, near the capital Islamabad.

"This happened at six o'clock. These avalanches usually happen at night. It took them by surprise," Abbas told Reuters.

The army listed the names of the missing soldiers and civilians on its public relations website.

The military has ruled Pakistan for more than half of its 64 year history, setting foreign and security policy even when civilian governments are in power, as is the case now.

Siachen is in the northern part of the Himalayan region of Kashmir. The no-man's-land of Siachen is 20,000 feet (6,000 metres) above sea level.

Military experts say the inhospitable climate and avalanche-prone terrain have claimed more lives than gunfire.

Muslim-majority Kashmir is at the heart of hostility between India and Pakistan and was the cause of two of their three full-scale wars.`

Siachen has been described as the world's highest battlefield. Indian and Pakistani troops have fought at altitudes of over 20,000 feet in temperatures of minus 60 degrees Celsius.

Between 10,000 and 20,000 Indian and Pakistani troops are stationed in the mountains above the glacier.

A tentative peace process is under way, with Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari scheduled to meet Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Sunday, the first visit to India by a Pakistani head of state since 2005.

It's also longer and heavier than existing destroyers -- but will have half the crew because of automated systems.

It wasn't always this way.
The General Accounting Office expressed concerns that the Navy was trying to incorporate too much new technology. Some Navy officials pointed out that it's less capable than existing destroyers when it comes to missile defense, and a defense analyst warned that it would be vulnerable while operating close to shore for fire support.
Even its "tumblehome" hull was criticized as potentially unstable in certain situations.
The 600-foot-long ships are so big that the General Dynamics-owned shipyard spent $40 million to construct a 106-foot-tall building to assemble the giant hull segments.
And then there's the cost, roughly $3.8 billion apiece, according to the Navy's latest proposed budget.
Including research and development, the cost grows to $7 billion apiece, said Winslow Wheeler, director of the Straus Military Reform Project at the Center for Defense Information in Washington.
Because of cost, the originally envisioned 32 ships dipped to 24 and then seven. Eventually, program was truncated to just three. The first, the Zumwalt, will be christened next year and delivered to the Navy in 2014.
But Greenert told reporters that the ship fits perfectly into the new emphasis on bolstering the U.S. military presence in the Pacific in response to Asia's growing economic importance and China's rise as a military power.
Greenert didn't go into detail on how the new ship could be used. But the Defense Department has expressed concerns that China is modernizing its Navy with a near-term goal of stopping or delaying U.S. intervention in a conflict involving Taiwan. China considers the self-governing island a renegade province.
Defense officials also see a potential flashpoint in the South China Sea, where China's territorial claims overlap with those of other countries including Vietnam, the Philippines and Malaysia.
The Zumwalt's new technology will allow the warship to deter and defeat aggression and to maintain operations in areas where an enemy seeks to deny access, both on the open ocean and in operations closer to shore, the Navy says.
Jay Korman, industry analyst with The Avascent Group, said the warship uses so much new technology that it's viewed by the Navy as a "silver bullet" answer to threats. The only problem is the cost.
"They were looking to introduce so many new technologies at once, and the cost ballooned," he said. "I don't think people have changed their minds that it's a capable ship. It's just too expensive."
Unlike another new ship entering the Navy's arsenal -- the small and speedy "littoral combat ship" -- the Zumwalt will be heavily armored and armed.
The Zumwalt's 155 mm deck guns were built to pound the shore with guided projectiles to pave the way for the Marines to arrive in landing craft, and they're far more cost-effective in certain situations than cruise missiles, said Eric Wertheim, author of the "Naval Institute's Guide to Combat Fleets of the World."
The smaller crew also represents a substantial cost savings, he added.
Down the road, the ship could one day be equipped with an electromagnetic railgun, a powerful weapon that uses a magnetic field and electric current to fire a projectile at several times the speed of sound.
Production will stop after three ships, and the Navy will go back to building tried-and-true Arleigh Burke-class destroyers, 510-foot-long ships featuring a versatile Aegis radar system that's being modified for ballistic missile defense. Even with modifications, the ships will cost far less than the Zumwalt-class ships.
For Bath's 5,400 workers, the Zumwalt has been both exciting and challenging, with a new design and new construction techniques. In the coming months, workers will take delivery of the composite deck house and helicopter hangar, which are being built at the Huntington Ingalls shipyard in Mississippi. Those will be placed on the Bath-built hull.
"If anybody can do it and do it successfully, then I'm confident that's us," said Jay Wadleigh, vice president of Local S6 of the Machinists Union in Bath.

Sukhoi SuperJet Disappears During Indonesia Demo Flight

A
Sukhoi SuperJet 100, the first new Russian passenger plane in more than
two decades, disappeared during a demonstration flight in Indonesia
with about 40 people onboard.
The plane vanished from radar in West
Java at around 2:33 p.m., after declining to 6,000 feet, according to
Sunarbowo Sandi, operational director at Indonesia’s National Search
& Rescue Agency. About 100 people were deployed to search the area
after bad weather forced helicopters to turn back. Herry Bakti Gumay,
aviation director at Indonesia’s transport ministry, gave the passenger
numbers.
The SuperJet, certified to fly by Russian authorities in
February 2011, is the spearhead in an attempt to revive the nation’s
aerospace following the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union. The aircraft,
which seats 70 to 90 people, is still waiting approval from European
authorities.
“It’s a setback, but we don’t know anything about the
causes yet,” said Richard Aboulafia, vice president of the Teal Group,
an aviation forecaster in Fairfax, Virginia. “Russia’s jetliner industry
completely lost its competitiveness after the Cold War and shrank to
almost nothing.”
United Aircraft Corp., the parent of Sukhoi,
confirmed the plane went missing about 20 minutes after take-off. The
jet was undertaking its second demonstrator flight for the day, after a
smooth first round, and had been fully checked, said Olga Kayukova, a
spokeswoman. The plane had performed successfully in Myanmar, Pakistan
and Kazakhstan before the Indonesia flights, and was supposed to be next
shown in Laos and Vietnam, she said.

CIDAHU, Indonesia: Indonesian rescuers Thursday spotted the wreckage of a missing Russian Sukhoi Superjet that disappeared in mountainous terrain during a demonstration flight with about 50 people aboard.

Russia's first post-Soviet civilian jet vanished from radar screens south of Indonesia's capital Jakarta on Wednesday, 50 minutes into what was meant to be a short flight to show off its capabilities to prospective buyers.

Initial efforts to locate the jet proved fruitless and after the search resumed at first light on Thursday, the crew of an Indonesian Super Puma military helicopter saw the wreckage in the vicinity of a dormant volcano.

"The Sukhoi has been found just now," said Ketut Parwa, search and rescue agency chief for Jakarta, who was coordinating operations. "There is debris spotted by the helicopter, (we have) confirmed it is from the Sukhoi," he said.

National search and rescue chief Daryatmo, who goes by one name, said the helicopter's pilot had spotted wreckage including the Sukhoi logo on the ground.

"We spotted the fragments at the coordinates where we lost contact with the plane," he told a news conference.

Ali Umri Lubis, spokesman for the search helicopter's military airbase, said the plane was spotted in the Cijeruk area, near the dormant volcano Mount Salak, close to the city of Bogor in West Java.

Cijeruk is in a mountainous area 6,500 feet (2,000 metres) above sea level, 50 miles (80 kilometres) southeast of Jakarta. Indonesian officials have said the Sukhoi descended to about 6,000 feet shortly before it vanished.

"The debris was found by the helicopter on a mountainside, around 1,800 metres (5,900 feet) above sea level," said Lieutenant Colonel Mukhlis, a military commander in the West Java city of Sukabami.

"We don't know how big it is, what part of the plane, and the condition of the passengers. We also have not decided how to evacuate (victims or survivors), whether by air or land," he added.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono told reporters that "all efforts must be made in this rescue operation... and the priority must be to save survivors, if any".

All aboard were Indonesian aviation and airline representatives, except for eight Russians — four of them crew and four of them Sukhoi employees — plus an American and one Frenchman, officials said.

The twin-engine Superjet 100, a new passenger aircraft, is crucial to Russia's hopes of becoming a major player in the modern aviation market, and a major accident would be the first disaster to involve the type.

The demonstration flight was part of an Asian tour to promote the aircraft, which is a joint venture between Sukhoi and Italy's Alenia Aeronautica. It made its first commercial flight last year.

So far it is being flown by two airlines, Russia's Aeroflot and Armenia's Armavia, but orders have been confirmed with more, including Indonesia's Kartika Airlines and Sky Aviation, the Antara news agency reported in Jakarta.

Reports of the number on board varied, with local rescue officials saying the plane was carrying 46 people and Trimarga Rekatama, the company responsible for inviting the passengers, saying 50 were on board.

Juanda, a 41-year-old villager near Mount Salak, said he was feeding his chickens on Wednesday when he heard a roar overhead.

"I looked up and saw a huge white plane moving unsteadily just slightly below the mountain summit. It was still way above the trees but veering left and right, and then it disappeared," he told AFP by telephone from Tenjolaya district,

"I heard a sound like firecrackers, but I couldn't see it anymore."

By midnight Wednesday, hundreds of rescuers had set up three posts around Mount Salak as they prepared to resume their mission at dawn on Thursday.

Ahmad Rifai, who arrived at the Cidahu rescue base seeking news of his sister, a 30-year-old stewardess who had stood in for a colleague who was supposed to have been on board, broke down as he contemplated her fate.

"Why are rescuers so slow? Why didn't they start searching for it quickly?" complained Rifai, 48. "If they had been quick, maybe my sister would still be..." he trailed off in mid-sentence.

Yudistira Alex, 43, who had several friends on board, arrived at Cidahu late Wednesday.

"They're four of my best childhood friends. We are inseparable like brothers," he muttered between sobs. "I don't know who to blame, maybe this is fate."

It returned to Halim Perdanakusuma airport, east of Jakarta, after the first flight where some people got off because it was the time for Muslim prayers and then got left behind, according to Sunaryo. Others who had not planned to fly got on board.
