:: Boeing to Offer F-35-Like Cockpit Display for Super Hornet

Boeing plans to offer an F/A-18E/F Super Hornet with large-area cockpit displays similar to the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter as the company pursues new foreign sales from Canada to Japan.

The cockpit upgrade for the Super Hornet is intended to equalise one of the perceived advantages offered by the F-35's multifunction, touchscreen display, which measures 8 x 20in (20 x 51cm).

Boeing has evaluated a display with the same dimensions as the F-35, but found that pilots have preferred a larger 11 x 19in screen, says F/A-18E/F programme manager Mike Gibbons.

The single display can be configured to digitally mimic the Super Hornet's existing cockpit layout, or allow pilots to overlay data from several sources on to a single screen, Gibbons says. The displays can be integrated into both seats for the F/A-18F.

The technology remains in developmental form, but can be integrated in time to meet the timelines for any future sales in foreign markets, he says. Boeing is evaluating bids from undisclosed suppliers to manufacture the displays.

The US Navy, however, has already rejected Boeing's overtures to retrofit the display on its fleet. Although Boeing believes the upgrade would reduce lifecycle maintenance costs, the service does not want to operate two different display technologies at the same time, Gibbons says.

The new cockpit display made its public debut at the Navy League exhibit hall in early May. Boeing also showed off the new technology in Ottawa in early June at the CANSEC conference and exhibition.

Boeing plans to offer the F/A-18E/F for Canada's requirement to replace its ageing CF-18 fleet later this decade. Canada has invested $150 million to participate in the F-35 development programme, but plans to stage a competition for the procurement contract.

Meanwhile, Boeing is also offering the Super Hornet to buyers in Brazil, Denmark, India, Japan and Kuwait.

The F/A-18E/F's first international buyer, Australia, has no plans to order the upgraded cockpit, having already received the first five of its 24 two-seat aircraft.

Malaysia's First Submarine Passes Tropical Water Trials

KUALA LUMPUR: KD Tunku Abdul Rahman, the country's first submarine, is ready for combat operations. The submarine attained its initial operational capability (IOC) status after successfully undergoing tropical water trials for the last three months.

Industry sources told The Malay Mail the submarine has overcome teething problems which prevented it from completing the tropical water trials earlier this year.

These sources said the submarine was expected to be declared fully operational by year-end. Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) chief Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Jaafar, however, was not available for comment yesterday.

KD Tunku Abdul Rahman is based at the RMN base in Teluk Sepanggar, near Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

On Feb 10, The Malay Mail reported technical defects forced the RM1billion-plus French-built Scorpene submarine to delay tropical water trials scheduled for completion by end January.

As a result, the submarine's builder, DCNS SA, extended its warranty, which was supposed to expire on Jan 25, until May 25 so that the submarine could complete this exercise, which is the first step to obtaining an IOC status.

RMN's second submarine, KD Tun Razak is expected to arrive from France in late July or early August. The RMN procured these two submarines for some RM3.4 billion in 2002 from French and Spanish shipbuilders, DCNS and Navantia.

They are classified as Perdana Menteri-class submarines with the RMN. Both submarines are armed with Black Shark wire-guided torpedoes and Exocet SM39 anti-ship missiles.

They are able to carry out antisubmarine or anti-surface ship warfare, as well as special forces deployment in coastal waters.

Both vessels are equipped with an emergency system to ensure the survival of its 32-man crew for up to seven days.

These submarines are reportedly able to spend an average of 240 days a year at sea.

Scorpene Submarines Maintenance Cost Yet To Be Finalised -- Zahid

09 Juni 2010

KUALA LUMPUR: The maintenance cost of the two Royal Malaysian Navy Scorpene submarines had yet to be finalised, said Defence Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
He said the government was currently holding negotiations to get the best deals for the maintenance of the submarines.

"A claim that DCNS (France shipbuilder) had offered a three-year contract worth Euro 6 million or RM30 million to Boustead Naval Corporation Sdn Bhd is a slander and baseless," he said to a question from Tian Chua (PKR-Batu) when winding up debate at the Dewan Rakyat here today.
Ahmad Zahid also denied Tian Chua's claim that both submarines were equipped with navigation safety and combat systems, sensors and a periscope simulator.

The navy took delivery of the two Scorpene submarines costing RM3.4 billion from DCNS and its Spanish partner, Navantia last year.

The contract for the supply and delivery of Scorpene submarine navigation safety and combat systems, sensors and periscope simulators costing RM128.5 million was signed during the Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2010, said Ahmad Zahid, adding that they were procurement of simulators used to train the submarine crew.

"The simulators were not built into the submarine but rather installed in the training room," he said.
Tian Chua claimed that the cost of maintaining the two submarines amounted RM270 million per year and DCNS had signed a contract worth RM128.5 million or Euro 27 million to supply the navigation safety and combat systems, sensors and periscope simulators.

Eurocopter reveals Chinook-style heavy transport helicopter design

[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Eurocopter's proposed for Heavy Transport Helicopter with Chinook style

Eurocopter's proposed future Heavy Transport Helicopter (HTH) design has changed dramatically, thanks to the company's fresh co-operation with US manufacturer Boeing.

On show in model form at Eurocopter's stand in the Heli Centre (hall 1, stand 130), the HTH now shows more than a passing resemblance to Boeing's iconic CH-47 Chinook, but with a massive 33t maximum take-off weight.

The aircraft's tandem four-bladed main rotors have a span of 19.5m (64ft) and the helicopter would be capable of carrying up to 56 troops in addition to its three-person crew, Eurocopter says. The concept has a proposed 167kt (310km/h) top speed, and would cruise at around 148kt to an altitude of around 23,000ft.

Eurocopter says the concept has a projected range of 300km (162nm) with its maximum 13t payload, with this increasing to 1,000km at 8t. In-flight refuelling would stretch its range to up to 5,000km, it adds.

Acting on behalf of the French and German governments, the European Defence Agency (EDA) has previously identified a requirement for a new transport helicopter capable of lifting 13t of equipment and supplies.

Body cross section for HTH (image : rotor-rescue)

The HTH design has now moved beyond the concept stage, although no formal acquisition programme has been established by potential buyers. And Eurocopter’s relationship with Boeing marks a departure from the USA’s initial reluctance to work with European industry when the system was first touted in 2004.

“What is quite logical is that two global players are sitting together and sharing their strengths and knowledge,” says Hans Weber, Eurocopter’s vice-president of the HTH programme. “We have a logical structure of workshare driven by competencies, and not by politics. What you see is the outcome so far.”

Weber says “the pre-design is very mature, and meets the requirements set by the NATO staff targets.” The companies have been exchanging proposed solutions with the organisation for the last one to two years, and “so far we’ve got very positive feedback,” he adds.

The intention is for Boeing and Eurocopter to each perform 50% of a future project, using off-the-shelf technologies wherever possible. “This helicopter should not be used as a technology platform, but use state of the art technologies which already exist,” Weber says. “This makes it cheaper, and easier.”

For example, several candidate engines already exist which could power the design, he notes.

The EDA hosted a half-day aerial capabilities seminar at the show on Tuesday, with discussion topics having included industrial collaboration, air transport and unmanned air vehicles. "Europe's military aerospace industry is unlikely to be sustained without transformational action and new ways of business," the agency says.

Deadly new Russian weapon hides in shipping container

(Reuters) - A Russian company is marketing a devastating new cruise missile system which can be hidden inside a shipping container, giving any merchant vessel the capability to wipe out an aircraft carrier.

Potential customers for the formidable Club-K system include Kremlin allies Iran and Venezuela, say defense experts. They worry that countries could pass on the satellite-guided missiles, which are very hard to detect, to terrorist groups.

"At a stroke, the Club-K gives a long-range precision strike capability to ordinary vehicles that can be moved to almost any place on earth without attracting attention," said Robert Hewson of Jane's Defense Weekly, who first disclosed its existence.

A promotional video for the Club-K on the website of Moscow-based makers Kontsern-Morinformsistema-Agat shows an imaginary tropical country facing a land, sea and air attack from a hostile neighbor.

It fights back by loading three shipping containers concealing Club-Ks onto a truck, a train and a ship, disperses them, and then launches a devastating strike on its enemy, destroying its warships, tanks and airfields.

"The idea that you can hide a missile system in a box and drive it around without anyone knowing is pretty new," said Hewson, who is editor of Jane's Air-Launched Weapons.

"Nobody's ever done that before."

Hewson estimated the cost of the Club-K system, which packs four ground or sea-launched cruise missiles into a standard 40-foot shipping container, at $10-20 million.

"Unless sales are very tightly controlled, there is a danger that it could end up in the wrong hands," he said.

The promotional video showed how an ordinary shipping container with the Club-K inside could be hidden among other containers on a train or a ship. When required, the roof lifts off and the four missiles stand upright ready to fire.

An official reached by telephone at makers Kontsern Morinformsistema-Agat declined to answer questions about the Club-K.

He said the firm had no spokesman and he needed time to study written questions before passing a request to the firm's management.

Russia is one of the world's top arms exporters, selling a record $8.5 billion of weapons last year to countries ranging from Syria and Venezuela to Algeria and China. Its order book is estimated to top $40 billion.

Mikhail Barabanov, a defense expert at Russia's Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies (CAST), said that as far as he understood, the Club-K was still at the concept stage.

"Potential clients include anyone who likes the idea," he said. "It is known that the United Arab Emirates has shown interest in buying the Club."

Barabanov said the Club-K used proven missiles from Novator, an established Russian maker of weaponry including anti-submarine, surface-to-air and submarine-launched missiles.

One of the missiles on offer is a special anti-ship variant with a second stage which splits off after launch and accelerates to supersonic speeds of up to Mach 3.

"It's a carrier-killer," said Hewson of Jane's. "If you are hit by one or two of them, the kinetic impact is vast...it's horrendous."
